I hope you are enjoying your summer and taking time to relax and enjoy life. Taking time for yourself, family and friends is critical to your mental and physical health…. So make sure you are getting plenty of summer time!
With July fast approaching, so does the Character Education Conference. This year marks a very special one in that it will be our last conference for a while. We are planning to end our 22 year run with a special innovative and inspiring program. One of the highlights is sure to be a special tribute to Hal Urban – an amazing Champion of Character – who has been with us for every one of our 22 conferences. His contribution to the Character Education movement in our region is unparalleled. Besides Hal, we have 5 special Pre-Conference sessions that offer something for everyone and then Joe Ehrmann kicks off the conference as Terrell Strayhorn begins our final day as we wrap us our 22 years with a celebration of the State and National Schools of Character.
We invite you to join us July 26-28 at Westminster Christian Academy for multiple days of collaborative learning experiences and celebrations of transformational impact. This newsletter is dedicated to highlighting many of these opportunities for you. Several of the one-day experiences come with a special July pricing of just $99!
Enjoy your summer. I look forward to seeing you at the conference in July!

Character Day 2016
Now in its third year, Character Day, set for September 22, is an exciting global day where students and educators from around the world screen films on the science of character development from different perspectives. Students dive into free printed discussion materials and resources while joining an online global conversation around character -- focusing on who they are, who they want to be in the world, and how to develop these character strengths (resilience, grit, empathy, courage, kindness)—all rooted in evidence-based research.
Last year there were over 6,784 events at schools and classrooms across the world, each tying Character Day into their lesson plans, after-school programs, and special assemblies or back to school events. Your Character Day event can look and feel any way you would like it to be.....any time of the day, anywhere, and any size. Some schools did campus-wide assemblies, other teachers did specific events in their classrooms. The Character Day organizers leave the creativity of what the day looks like to the educators, they just provide the materials (Films, Periodic Table of Character Strengths Poster, printed discussion materials, a robust online hub of resources and lessons plans and an online conversation with leading experts on Character education from multiple perspectives). Character Day is supported by grants so there is no cost to participate. You can watch the acclaimed short films “The Science of Character” and “The Adaptable Mind” to get a better sense of what types of films will be shown on Character Day.
Join The Anti-Bullying Movement
Last year, leaders from seven high schools leveraged the power of social media and their personal character to counter cyberbullying with cultures of connection. They came together at a Fall Summit and planned the relaunch of the student-generated #startswithus hashtag. With more than 9,000 Post-It notes, 4,000 initial tweets and instagrams, an introduction on Fox2News, the hashtag trended third in the St. Louis region and started a movement that still continues.
New teams are invited to the 2016-17 Summits to bring a Culture of Connection to their communities. Learn more about High School: Character Goes Viral on Sept. 22 or Middle School: A Culture of Allies on Oct. 4.

CharacterPlus Members Committing to 2016-17
Superintendents and school leaders are returning signed letters committing to another year of CharacterPlus membership at a cost that has remained stable for more than a decade. More than 60% are in, a strong vote of confidence for our new leadership and our intent to develop professional development that dives into the deep end of the character education pool. Superintendents and District Leaders will come together on Sept. 6 for lunch and discerning conversations that answer the question: What next? Until then, thank you for your dedication to building communities that bring out the best in all of us.
